RetireSafe Presents summer 2012 “Standing Up for America’s Seniors” Award

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Today RetireSafe, representing more than 400,000 seniors nationwide, and joined by local senior advocates, honored Representative Allen West for his efforts to protect the health benefits and security of Florida’s seniors.

Yana Jurovitzki, Director of Communications and Advocacy for RetireSafe; Julio Fuentes, President and CEO of the Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Justine Hoo, President of Broward Coalition on Aging, Member of the Advisory Council of the Aging and Disability Resource Center, and Co-Vice Chairperson of Broward Aging Alliance; Nancy Molina, Recreation Supervisor of the City of Boynton Beach Senior Center; and Everett Wilkinson, Chair of the South Florida Tea Party presented the RetireSafe “Standing Up For America’s Seniors” Award commemorative plaque at West’s West Palm Beach district office, recognizing West’s accomplishments and service to older Americans.

A bipartisan group of Members of Congress are being recognized by RetireSafe in their home districts throughout the August recess. These members have acted to protect seniors’ health care benefits, by ensuring access to affordable medications through Medicare Part D, opposing any laws or regulations that threaten the doctor/patient relationship and speaking out against proposals that threaten to limit access to health care and increase Medicare premiums.

“America’s seniors continue to count on those in Washington who are willing to put politics aside and fight for the benefits they have earned,” said RetireSafe President Thair Phillips. “The benefits and rights of seniors are under attack and seniors need champions in Washington to preserve the benefits that many seniors depend on,” he continued. “RetireSafe is pleased to be able to recognize these Members of Congress, some of them for the second time in a row, for their tireless work in protecting Medicare and supporting seniors both in Washington and locally,” he concluded.

RetireSafe is a nonprofit, nonpartisan grassroots organization that advocates and educates on behalf of America’s seniors on issues regarding Social Security, Medicare, health and financial well-being.

ALLSTATE INSURANCE TEAMS UP WITH FLORIDA STATE HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TO OFFER GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL SUPPLEMENTAL PLANS

ACCCE applauds the FHSCC for its letter to Congress expressing the concerns over the rising electricity costs that will impact Hispanic business across Florida as a result of EPA regulations.

Our nation is facing one of the toughest and longest economic declines in our lifetimes. On top of high unemployment and stagnant incomes, Florida families and businesses now are threatened with rising energy prices created by increased and intrusive government regulations.

Energy already represents a large expense for Floridians.  According to a recent analysis by economist Eugene Trisko, the 55 percent of Floridians who earn less than $50,000 a year must devote nearly a quarter of their take home pay to energy costs. That situation is worse for lower income families and Hispanics:  Where the poorest households that earn less than $10,000 annually spend 74 percent of their family income on energy (before government assistance).  Due to income disparities, Hispanics are hit harder by higher energy prices.

Coalitions such as the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) are working hard to keep energy prices low here in Florida and across the country.  And, in Florida that means continuing to use affordable and efficient U.S. coal resources, which is America’s most abundant domestically produced fuel.
