Hispanic Chamber Hosts Training Institute

The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation, in partnership with Wells Fargo and the University of Notre Dame Mendoza School of Business will host the first Chamber Training Institute of 2013 in Dallas, Texas on January 14-15 at the Adolphus hotel in downtown Dallas. The USHCC Foundation's two-day nonprofit certificate program will address chamber membership growth, from retention and recruitment strategies to creating a ninety-day membership growth plan.

The USHCC Foundation Chamber Training Institute was created to help provide unique educational opportunities that would foster the growth and development of Hispanic business leaders and entrepreneurs. During the program, participants will be introduced to industry experts and professors who will share fundamental techniques for time management and membership growth. Attendees of the Dallas Chamber Training Institute include members from over a dozen chambers of commerce across the country.

The training program features workshops such as "How to Clarify What You Really Want From Life and Work" and "Making the Case for Return on Membership Investment." Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate in Membership Growth and Time Management from the University of Notre Dame Mendoza School of Business.

Hispanics, who make up 10 percent of the American electorate, played a key role in President Barack Obama's re-election. He received 71 percent of the Latino vote. Now Obama is focusing on comprehensive immigration reform to address the status of the nation's more than 11 million undocumented immigrants, a quarter of them in California.

The board of directors of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) has elected immediate past chairwoman Nina Vaca to the position of chairman emeritus. Known nationwide for her entrepreneurial achievements and coalition-building, she has been on the front lines of the USHCC mission -- to improve economic opportunities for our country's three million Hispanic-owned businesses and by extension, for all Americans. Vaca is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pinnacle Technical Resources, Inc. which provides vendor management and technology services to some of the world's best known corporations, including Accenture, AT&T, Bank of America, BMW, Capital One, Hewlett Packard, Pepsico, Unisys, and Verizon.

"As USHCC Chairman, Nina Vaca was both a visionary and a hands-on executive, overseeing a broad range of new initiatives," says Javier Palomarez, USHCC President and CEO. "Those accomplishments include historic structural changes such as opening our Board to Directors from the corporate sphere and to non-Hispanics, as well as setting term limits for all Board positions. She also created a scholarship program that allows entrepreneurs to attend Dartmouth University's Executive Education Program. Vaca also oversaw three of the organization's most successful conventions in terms of attendance, high-profile speakers, influential guests, record fundraising and media coverage."

As a child, Ms. Vaca emigrated from Quito, Ecuador to Los Angeles where both her parents established businesses in which she was an active participant. In 1989, she officially became an entrepreneur by taking over the family business, and preparing it for sale. Vaca then received a B.A. from Texas State University where she was later recognized as the youngest Distinguished Alumna. She has also received Honorary Doctorates from both Northwood University and Mary Mount College. Additionally, she graduated from executive education programs at Harvard Business School, Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business and the Kellogg School of Management. "Nina Vaca is a role model for our country's entrepreneurial community, illustrating the power of formal academic training combined with real-world experience" notes Marc Rodriguez, USHCC Chairman. "Whether it is guiding a business through a distressed economy post-9/11 as she did at Pinnacle, or building business plans that resonate with investors, Nina always emphasizes to aspiring entrepreneurs the importance of financial literacy and business knowledge combined with good business instincts."

Ms. Vaca is a member of the board at Kohl's Department Stores and Comerica Bank, as well as the White House initiative Start Up America Her story opens the "Entrepreneur" chapter of "Understanding Business," a McGraw-Hill textbook and has been featured in FAST COMPANY, FORBES, KIPLINGER and ENTREPRENEUR. Ernst & Young selected her as Entrepreneur of the Year for Technology & Communications for the Southwest Region and the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) named her the Supplier of the Year.

Chase.com/espanol now offers customers the option to conduct online banking transactions in Spanish. Chase announced that consumer and business banking customers can now manage their accounts, including conducting many transactions, in Spanish. Through new functionality on Chase.com/espanol, the bank now offers a comprehensive Spanish online banking option to customers.
 
“We continue to tailor products and services to meet the financial needs of the Hispanic community, which is a significant and growing customer segment,” said Pablo Sanchez, National Executive for Chase Consumer Banking. “These added features set us apart in the industry and, more importantly, deliver a great experience to customers who prefer to manage their personal and business banking in Spanish.”
 
Through Chase.com/espanol, customers now can perform many of the same functions in Spanish as they can in English, including:
 
  • Manage Chase checking, auto, student, home loan, credit card and business accounts
  • View account activity and transaction history;
  •  Pay bills and transfer money; and
  •  Use tools such as Chase QuickPaySM to send money to nearly anyone with an email address or mobile telephone number.
 
The site also allows customers to toggle between English and Spanish while banking online.
Customers who are new to online banking can register at Chase.com/espanol or by going to Chase.com/bancaporinternet.
 
Chase.com/espanol originally launched in 2008, offering customers information on Chase’s portfolio of products and services. Chase also provides bilingual customer service in-person and via phone, the option to use ATMs in Spanish, bill inserts and account statements in Spanish, and printed product and services information available through branches for many personal and business banking needs.

The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) today expressed its strong dissatisfaction with the federal government’s minority procurement efforts in 2011. In a recent Bloomberg report, U.S. government contracts awarded to Hispanic firms fell for the first time in a decade, decreasing at a faster rate than those awarded to all companies.
